| In our Sunshine District, we have conducted over 50 day-long music festivals around the state. Thousands of students and hundreds of Music Educators have been exposed to our wonderful style of vocal music. We are striving to bring a cappella vocal music to its rightful place in our schools, our homes, and our communities. There are sixty-seven counties in Florida. Each county has its own, separate school system, each governed by its own School Board. Each County has the right to determine its own structure, as long as it observes the parameters set by the Florida Department of Education. That being said, there are some counties that have ABSOLUTELY NO MUSIC CURRICULUM AT ALL! Our hobby, Barbershopping, is a direct outgrowth of man's inherent love of singing; a love that usually began at our parent's knee and was nurtured in the public schools. But as budgets tighten around the country, the arts are often the first victims of "cost cutting" schemes designed to stretch inadequate funds. Back in the 1980s, the leaders of SPEBSQSA realized that vocal music and music training was slowly but certainly being eliminated from our schools. They formulated a plan to reintroduce and to foster singing in North American life by creating the Harmony Foundation. The principal goal of the Harmony Foundation is to preserve vocal music in our school system. That's why our motto is: "Singing is Life!" If you or anyone you know is interested in bringing vocal music back to your school, please contact our Youth Outreach Chairman [above] and let him know. He'll take care of the rest! |
